Showing In South Africa
Showing in SA is a very social event!
The SAGPS prides itself in having non political play in the show environment.
But how is this achieved?
Well simple: We do not speak about one another to each other behind another members back!
If this happens, the person is simply asked to leave.

But how is this achieved?
Well simple: We do not speak about one another to each other behind another members back!

Now lets talk about how this works:
The SAGPS runs a number of shows a year with affiliated clubs.
We run a point system that allows a member to Champion their Guinea Pig and run for Guinea Pig of the year.
Each Show member is required to register their pig for the specific year to be shown: 2018.
The exhibitor will then receive a book of show reports for each individual exhibit, with each show listed for the year, as the exhibitor you will be
required to take your report book with you and present the book with your exhibit,
where the judge judging will then write their report in the book and award the piggy accordingly.
The book will then be handed back to the exhibitor.
If the exhibitor has left the books at home the piggy will still be judged, but without a written report.
Each Guinea Pig is judged against the written breed standard and awarded accordingly.
The awards and point system works as follows, and is based on judges opinion for correctness to breed standard:
Under 6 months
Sapphire 60% to 79% (5 points)
Emerald 80% to 89% (10 points)
Ruby 90% to 100% (15 points)
Adults
Bronze 70% to 79% (10 points)
Silver 80% to 89% (20 points)
Gold 90% to 100% (33 points)
These points all accumulate over the show career of each individual Guinea Pig to achieve Champion and Grand Champion Status.
Champion Status (400 points) Grand Champion (600 points)

Meet our Judges
Andrea Smith (All Breeds)
Andrea started judging in 2017 and has been showing many different breeds over the past few years. Andrea's love for the long coated Peruvian and Texels, has kept her focused on her breeding and the care for the two breeds quality and breeding in SA. Andrea has an excellent, keen and honest eye when judging, and along side judging Andrea is one of SAGPS's successful Show Managers. |
Stacy Vogel (Groups 1, 2, 3, 6 & 7)
Stacy joined the judges team with a great passion for the long coats. Stacy has shown and owned champion Peruvians with an ability to prepare show coats not seen in SA before. Stacy's passion for Guinea Pigs extends beyond the shows. You will find her at fairs and expos creating Public awareness. If showing a long coat under Stacy be sure to spend that extra time on the coat. |
Michael Royston (All Breeds)
Co founder of the SAGPS, started judging and showing many different breeds over the past years. With the passion for breeders to breed with judges opinion Michael decided to set up and establish the SAGPS. Michael also is the founder of the SAGPS register which holds all the records of the Registered pigs in SA. With Michaels degree in education, it was inevitable that Michael would establish the first judges panel for Guinea Pigs with a written Breed Standard and specific method of training judges to judge Guinea Pigs. |
Janine Stoltz (Groups 1, 2, 3, 6 & 7)
Janine is one of the most experienced judges based in Cape Town. Janine has trained and qualified many judges in SA and has owned and exhibited Guinea Pigs achieving SAGPS pig of the year with her pig Thai Tucker. Janine is a stickler for the health of the Guinea Pigs, and enjoys a healthy pig on the table, so be sure that nails are trimmed and ears are clean when guinea pigs are on the table when showing under Janine. |
Angelique Martin (All Breeds)
Angel as she is known has a very strong eye for well typed Guinea Pigs and has a passion for exceptional husbandry. Angel is also defining excellence and type on her Angelo offspring focusing specifically on the Peruvian & Alpaca breeds! Angel's support for well bred pigs and good homes goes way beyond. Angel will gladly assist with all the questions on Husbandry and available Rescues. |
